Professor Joel Wainwright, co-author of Climate Leviathan: A Political Theory of Our Planetary Future, is an expert in political economy, environmental change, and social theory. His notable publications include Decolonizing Development: Colonial Power and the Maya (2008), and Geopiracy: Oaxaca, Militant Empiricism, and Geographical Thought (2012).
In this lecture, Professor Wainwright discussed the awareness that the climate crisis has raised for humanity and explored alternative political solutions. He examined issues related to carbon emissions, including the rise of populism in the U.S., state-controlled capitalism in China, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, while emphasising the importance of finding a path toward carbon reduction through climate politics.
This lecture provided an opportunity to reconsider what it means to live on Earth in the climate crisis era, and to rethink ecological and political impacts of climate changes.
