Introduction and Application of Media Literacy

Media Literacy, Reading the World

This introductory book is about what “media literacy” is and how to apply this skill. This book aims to enhance readers’ ability to understand political and societal issues through their perspectives in the post-truth era, and consists of various stories, journals, and articles. The text predominantly focuses on developing the ability to interpret media in this era, highlighting the importance of literacy. Additionally, the book introduces the basic theories and methods necessary to enhance media literacy, as well as proposing the possibilities of an era where everyone can be a journalist.

The Need for Media Literacy Training

The reason why media literacy is important is that this skill impacts one’s perspective and understanding of the world, particularly in political thinking. Media works as a window and a way humans communicate with others and the world. The world seen through a round window would appear round, while the world through a star-shaped window would appear star-shaped. This is why each individual’s world could differ from another’s based on how they utilise media. Today, we live in the post-truth era where it is important to develop the ability to accurately understand media and to cultivate the attitude to evaluate the quality of information within it. This book aims to enhance people’s literacy, and to empower them to make their own perspectives and standards on political and social issues.
