2023 Mobility Humanities Conference

Post-apocalyptic Imagination in the Age of Extinction

The conference examined mobility in space and time in the context of Industry 4.0 and the Anthropocene. In the first part, “Imagination Beyond Earth and the Posthuman Condition,” Professor Sangkyu Shin (Ewha Womans University) discussed the epistemological shift by environmental changes due to the rapid development of information and communication technologies based on Luciano Floridi’s information philosophy. Professor Sanggeun Yoo (NY Marist College) discussed the transformation of the mobility concept in the history of Anglophone science fiction in a historical and cultural context and the unique spatial and temporal mobility of Korean science fiction. In the second part, “Post-apocalyptic Imagination and Art,” Professor Dohoon Bok (Seoul National University of Science and Technology) discussed the discourse of extinction and its implication in two 2020s Korean realist novels, Youngha Kim’s Farewell and Yisoo Choi’s The Second Moon. Professor Heeyoung Kim (Kookmin University) examined the art historical genealogy’s meanings of NamJune Baek’s “settled nomads” concept in the context of mobility in Industry 4.0.
