The Exploratory Study of Foucauldian Approaches to Mobilities Research

In this colloquium, Professor Myeong Jin Ban presented various aspects of the relationship between mobility research and Foucauldian theories. Professor Ban explained that “amongst Foucauldian approaches, ‘safety’ and ‘environment’ are two concepts deeply concerned with global phenomena and experiences such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the climate crisis.” He pointed out that mobility studies have been systemically conducted by using Foucauldian concepts; and emphasized that “Foucauldian approaches enable us to analyze a combination of complexities such as mobile knowledge, technologies, social classes, norms, and subjectivation processes, contributing to the studies related to mobility governmentality.”

Professor Myeong Jin Ban is a lecturer at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He has conducted research on cultural theories and popular culture theories not only in research offices/lecture rooms but also in the fields of (local) community and media practice. Professor Ban has also published journal articles entitled , < Making Sense of the Meanings of Community Media Practices: A Field Study of ‘Changshin-dong Radio ’ >. ​
