Professor Jin Tae Won received his Ph.D. from Seoul National University and is currently wokring as a senior researcher in Research Institute of Korean Studies at Korea University. He is interested in the philosophy of Spinoza, modern philosophy of Western Europe, modern French philosophy, philosophy of politics and theories of democracy. He is currently a member of the editorial board of Journal . His books include “The Democracy of Eul”, “Althusser Effect”, “Return of Spinoza”, and also translated Force de loi by Jacques Derrida and Spinoza and Politics by Etienne Balibar into Korean.
In this lecture, focusing on the concept of hospitality he identifies the political, philosophical problems that appear in Jacques Derrida, Walter Benjamin, and Etienne Balibar. He suggested that paradoxical phenomena in today’s highly developed society of mobility – for example, the strengthening of liquidity and the simultaneous strengthening of boundaries and fixed identity as well as the strengthening of hate, discrimination and exclusion – demands the need for a new reflection on philosophical concepts like hospitality. Examining works of Immanuel Kant, Jacques Derrida, and other major philosophers, he discusses the characteristics, limitations, and reforming directions of the concept of hospitality.
