The KU Academy of Mobility Humanities (MHA) held its 11th Mobility Humanities Colloquium with Dr. Soo-Young Nam (Korea National University of Arts). Professor Nam obtained her PhD in Comparative Literature from New York University. She was designated an Outstanding Scholar in Humanities awarded by Wooho Foundation for Humanities Development in 2017.
Prof. Soo-Young Nam gave a lecture on the characteristics of the film image, such as flowing and pause, paying attention to the possibility of dividing the film image. She explained that the film is made through a contradictory combination of fixed and moving images, which contain moments of movement and time. According to her, there are two logics underpinning the film: Automatism and Montage. Both of them play an important role in expanding the space of the film into the realm of fact and creating artificial speed through the gaps between the images. The lecture, which examined the theory of the film with philosophical methodology, provided the opportunity to re-recognize the film as a medium in which images cut out from the world create another world over time.
