The Academy of Mobility Humanities at Konkuk University, in collaboration with the Glocal Institute for Japan Studies at Sunchon National University, will co-organize the 2027 Critical Island Studies Conference, titled Archipelagic Mobilities and Infrastructures.
The conference seeks to reconsider mobilities and infrastructures from an archipelagic perspective and to explore productive intersections between Critical Island Studies and the mobility humanities. Bringing archipelagos, mobilities, and infrastructures into conversation, the conference will provide a platform for scholars from diverse academic backgrounds to engage in interdisciplinary discussions on mobility, islands and oceans, regionality, infrastructure, and sustainability. It also aims to generate new theoretical perspectives and envision alternative archipelagic futures beyond conventional disciplinary and territorial frameworks.

About the Critical Island Studies Consortium
The Critical Island Studies (CIS) Consortium is an international academic network that seeks to challenge Northern-Hemisphere- and Eurocentric modes of knowledge production. Moving beyond continent- and land-centered perspectives, CIS advances a seascape ontology and an archipelagic approach that foregrounds oceans, islands, relations, and movements. Through interdisciplinary research, the Consortium examines contemporary issues including climate change, mobility, infrastructure, sustainability, coloniality, and planetary futures.
