Tourism Joseon was a magazine published from June 1939 to December 1944 (renamed Culture Joseon in December 1940). Unlike earlier travel guides to Joseon, which tended to present abstract and stereotyped aspects based on museum-like introductions to cultural heritage or stereotypical images , Tourism Joseon sought to present a new sense of “Joseon-ness” through conveying information that was as distinctive and original as possible and evoking the pleasure of reading

By examining the background of the magazine’s founding, its diverse editorial design and composition, the characteristics of the cartoons and Korean literary works included in its pages, and the meanings attached to “Joseon women” and “Gyeongseong city” as showcases of colonial culture, this study offers an opportunity to glimpse aspects of the lives of those who consumed the space called “Joseon” during the Japanese colonial period.
