This book is a Korean translation of the book titled Rehabilitating the Peri-Urban by Christophe Gay・Sylvie Landriève・Anaïs Lefranc-Morin・Claire Nicolas・Lionel Rougé (Mobile Lives Forum, 2013).
Potentials of Peri-Urban Areas from Mobility Perspective
«Rehabilitating the Peri-Urban» offers an interpretation of themes developed during the 2nd International Meeting in 2013 held by the “Mobile Lives Forum,” an independent research institute established by the “Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF).” Beyond the simple comparison between urban versus peri-urban, the book discusses the potentials of peri-urban areas as places of sustainable development. There are differences in Europe’s and Korea’s peri-urban areas. Also, peri-urban areas are stereotypically characterized by self-segregation, automobile dependency, landscape uniformity, and lack of excitement compared to cities. However, the book proposes living in peri-urban areas as a starting point for good mobile lives.
Peri-Urban Areas, Networked and Rearranged Subterritories
Peri-urban areas are important and frequent subjects in the media and public and political debates. There are concerns in both Europe and South Korea that it would be hard to build sustainable cities in current ways. This is because existing city planning models are based on “engulfing” the space. There are three major problems raised by researchers of this book: What is peri-urban? Do peri-urban residents cause pollution? Is sustainable mobility possible? Peri-urban areas are created by the increase in urban population and the development of transportation technology. This book considers a peri-urban area as a “space between” separated from a dense city; and explores the possibility of a peri-urban area as a starting point for realizing good mobility that promotes individual achievement and freedom. Indeed, the book presents peri-urban areas as being “connected, rearranged, and less complicated subterritories.”
